Pumpkin Peanut Butter Dog Treats
Pumpkin Peanut Butter Dog Treats
Ingredients
1 cup 100% pure pumpkin purée (not pumpkin pie filling)
½ cup natural creamy peanut butter, xylitol/birch-sugar free
2 large eggs
1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats, finely ground
2–2½ cups whole wheat flour (or all-purpose), plus more for rolling
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, mix the pumpkin, peanut butter, and eggs until smooth.
Stir in the finely ground oats until combined.
Gradually stir in 2 cups of the whole wheat flour. Add additional flour, a few tablespoons at a time, until the dough is soft and slightly tacky but firm enough to roll and cut. You may not need the entire additional ½ cup.
Transfer to a lightly floured surface and roll to approximately ¼ inch thick.
Use a small cookie cutter to cut out the treats. Gather and reroll the scraps as needed.
Arrange the treats on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 20–25 minutes, or until firm and lightly browned around the edges.
For crunchier treats. Turn off the oven and leave the treats inside for another 20 minutes as the oven cools and dries them further.
Cool completely before serving.
Peanut Butter Safety: Always check the ingredient label before using peanut butter in homemade dog treats. Make sure it does not contain xylitol (also sometimes labeled birch sugar), an artificial sweetener that is highly toxic to dogs. Choose a plain, natural peanut butter without xylitol or other added sweeteners.
Storage: Allow treats to cool completely before storing. Keep them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. For longer storage, freeze for up to 2–3 months and thaw as needed. Because homemade dog treats contain fresh ingredients and no preservatives, refrigeration is recommended.
